LOS ANGELES, November 14th, 2002: Rhythm & Hues, the Academy Award®*
winning effects and animation studio renowned for producing leading CG characters
in such films as “Scooby-Doo” and “Cats & Dogs,”
has been awarded a large block of shots for "Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in
the Hat," a Universal Pictures/DreamWorks Pictures/Imagine Entertainment
presentation.
Rhythm & Hues will produce 270 shots of computer-generated animation and
visual effects, including character animation for Fish, the talking goldfish
to be voiced by Sean Hayes, and other CG characters along with numerous digital
set extensions, matte work and other visual effects duties.
Rhythm & Hues’ Douglas Smith, Oscar® winner for “Independence
Day,” (Best Visual Effects, 1997), will serve as visual effects supervisor,
with Erika W. Burton producing R&H's in-house work. Kurt Williams is the
overall visual effects producer for the production.
Mike Myers stars in the title role of “Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat,”
the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved literary classic. The
film is being produced by Academy Award winner Brian Grazer and directed by
Bo Welch, the Oscar-nominated film production designer making his debut as a
film director.
“The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss was first published in 1957,
and remains one of the top ten best-selling hardcover children's books of all
time. The mischievous feline visitor in the striped stove-pipe hat makes his
big screen debut with this live-action production, which will bring the delightfully
off-kilter Dr. Seuss characters - as well as some new ones created especially
for the film - to life on the big screen. Anticipated release date is November
21st, 2003.
Rhythm & Hues is wrapping up a banner year, which included acclaimed visual
effects in Paramount's "The Sum of All Fears," and significant contributions
to the box office success of "Scooby-Doo" (Warner Bros.), "Men
in Black II," (Sony) and “The Ring,” (Dreamworks). The studio
is currently at work on "Solaris," "Daredevil" and "X-Men
2" for Fox, as well as “Gigli” (Sony) and “Intolerable
Cruelty,” (Universal).
In September, Wired magazine named Rhythm & Hues one of the industry's
"Top 5 VFX Powerhouses." The studio is celebrating its 15th anniversary
this year.
* Best Visual Effects, "Babe," 1995.
