An effects animator must have a demo reel that shows not
only a good eye for lighting and motion, but also the ability
to handle very technically complicated problems - especially
procedurally generated effects. In the demo reel breakdown,
it helps if there is a (brief!) explanation of any technical
innovations presented on the reel. Strong scripting and programming
skills are essential.
As mentioned above, effects animators are at least responsible
for all procedurally generated effects, which may include
some or all of modeling, animating, and lighting - depending
on the effect. Some of our effects animators also write shaders
for Houdini and/or Renderman. In our semi-flex working environment,
effects animators have also been called upon to do more traditional
lighting tasks as well as what we call "muscle"
work (sometimes called "skinning" at other studios).
