President and Founder
John Hughes is president and founder of Rhythm & Hues Studios,
a leading producer of computer generated character animation and visual effects
for entertainment and advertising. Guiding a facility with hundreds of digital
artists and staff, John is committed to providing a collaborative and supportive
work environment in pursuit of the highest levels of artistic and technical
excellence.
Following a stint at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, John ventured west
to Los Angeles, joining the pioneering motion graphics firm Robert Abel and Associates,
where he became instrumental in the design and development of motion control
camera systems. This work paved the way for some of the first usage of computer
generated imagery (CGI) in feature films and commercials.
Anticipating the burgeoning field of CGI, John and a small cadre of former
Abel employees established Rhythm & Hues Studios in 1987, developing proprietary
software which, through its evolution, has set a high standard for both photo-real
and stylized character animation and visual effects. In 1995, the studio was
recognized with an Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects for the movie Babe. The
studio is also the recipient of two Scientific and Technical Academy Awards.
Today, Rhythm & Hues is one of the premiere enterprises in its field, with
over 100 feature films to its credit. The studio's current projects include
the highly anticipated Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,
among others.
In addition to his role at Rhythm & Hues, John is committed to improving
education for California students. He currently serves as Chairman of the Education
Committee for the Digital Coast Roundtable, and Chair of the Digital Coast
Foundation. He also serves on several Boards of Directors including: the California
Alliance for Arts Education (a member of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts
Education Network); the Entertainment Economy Institute; and the Workforce
Investment Board, a collaboration between government and private industry that
oversees all federal and state training funding for the City of Los Angeles.
Previously, he was a member of the California Superintendent of School's Task
Force for the Visual and Performing Arts.
In addition, John actively cultivates future generations of artists by offering
scholarships and internships to promising students, as well as studio tours
open to attendees from around the world.
John attended the University of Minnesota where he received a Masters degree
in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelors degree in Economics and Electrical
Engineering.
