For this modern take on the classic big, bad wolf fable, director Catherine Hardwicke wanted Rhythm & Hues team led by VFX supervisor Derek Spears, to create a wolf grounded in reality, but with a little something extra to take it outside the norm. A series of concept art pieces with R&H Art Director Chris Grun incorporated the characteristics Catherine was after, which were then balanced with what could make the creature animate-able in a physically believable way. Careful attention to ratios of the wolf's front and rear leg lengths made sure he could run realistically as a quadruped. Once the base design was completed, R&H 'iterated" with Catherine and VFX supervisor Jeff Okun's input to find the extra details to push the wolf into the world they wanted: more sinister eyes and head shape, and spiky, quill-like fur on the back. Snow interaction, footprints and water splashes in the Dye Pool were done in Houdini. Animation was done in Rhythm & Hues proprietary package, Voodoo.
