Rhythm and Hues

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas

  • Universal Pictures
  •

Directed by Ron Howard. Rhythm & Hues created CG eyeballs for shots Jim Carrey performed without contact lenses. The effects team utilized a head scan model of Mr. Carrey (made for a test of "Incredible Mister Limpet,") and, working in the R&H's proprietary software, tracked, lit and rendered the CG eyeballs on Mr. Carrey's face. For the flashback to the Grinch's troubled childhood, R&H created several Suess-like effects as scene transitions, including a "snow wipe" motif with snow particles dispersed by the wind. R&H also produced six different angles for the Grinch's triple somersault dive down the chimney while attached to a bungee-like cord made of CG fabric tied around the Grinch's ankles.
