Directed by Justin Lin, Rhythm & Hues produced an action-packed chase sequence, enhancing the action and surrounding environment led by Co-VFX Supervisors Raymond Chen and Mike Meaker. Although the script called for a key chase scene to occur in Tokyo’s Shibuya Square, filming restrictions required a different approach. Downtown Glendale, California doubled for Tokyo with the help of computer-generated digital set extensions, stitched panoramic backgrounds – even billboards (with R&H employees prominently featured!). Massive, the crowd simulation software utilizing artificial intelligence, was employed to populate the scene with digital extras - crowds of people crossing the square.
